forest products
Beech trees grow very well in the Northeast, especially in the region where I live, Central Maine. It seems that they like a sort of sandy soil with ample drainage. The tree trunk itself is covered in a grayish bark that is fairly smooth and about an eighth of an inch thick. The wood is not straight grained but rather "twisted". It therefore does not split good when chopping it up for firewood. When you do get it in pieces and properly dry it outdoors for 9 to 12 months, it burns very well and hot. It lasts for quite a while in the firebox. The best thing about the tree is it's look; bright green aspen shaped leaves and a good amount of "plumage". It provides great shade for the summer season and is, as far as I noticed, pretty much insect proof. It is a very beautiful tree and is actually my favorite. I would recommend that people plant and include them in all their landscaping projects. They will learn to love them as I have!
